A technical director is a senior technical specialist in e.g. an engineering firm, a technology firm, film company, theatre industry, video production business or any other type of technological organization. Technical directors are also known as technical experts or technical assistants. They are usually responsible for the overall design and development process and have access to all the major resources and personnel for the project. The responsibility of a technical director lies mainly on the shoulders of the director who has a wide knowledge of the field he works in and is the most qualified person to implement the project. It is his duty to make sure the project gets the required attention and resources so that the project is not delayed or stopped abruptly in its process.


Technicians working as technical directors can be classified into two groups according to their specialized technical background and level of responsibility. A technical assistant is a person employed by the company that is responsible for the implementation of the project as he or she is well informed about the technical aspects of the project and possesses the necessary skills to perform the duties. An employee of this kind of job may be employed by the director directly or indirectly by the company.


A technical assistant is the technical staff of the company, who is responsible for the formulation and implementation of the project in the technical department. The technical assistant has been hired by the company as an assistant to the director or for the management purpose. The technical assistant is generally responsible for the formulation and implementation of the technical work that has to be carried out during the entire duration of the project.


A technical director often has his own staff of technical personnel as well who help him in the execution of the project. The technical staff of a technical director includes an engineer, a programmer, a photographer, a typist, an illustrator, a producer, a sound technician, a computer analyst, a technical writer, a project manager, a designer, a marketing manager and an editor among many others. The work of these people varies according to the project requirements. The role of the technical director is often delegated to other employees for executing his project plan.
